Rabat – Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said that the next governmental action will be devoted to employment as a national priority.
Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas read a speech on behalf of the head of the government today in Rabat at the House of Councillor, to open the eighth International Parliamentary Forum on Social Justice.
“We have decided to dedicate the next phase of governmental action to the issue of employment and to make it a national priority which calls for concerted efforts and a complete willingness to accelerate the peace of job-creating investments and develop the national employment strategy,” he said.
Akhannouch said that the intended approach will provide “employment opportunities for all Moroccans,” in both urban and rural areas.
Morocco has been grappling with unemployment, which has reached over 1.58 million Moroccans nationwide. Between 2022 and 2023, Morocco’s economy lost 157,000 jobs.
The unemployment rate has increased from 11.8% to 13% at the national levels. In urban areas it rose from 15.8% to 16.8%, and in rural areas it rose from 5.2% to 6.3%.
Unemployment remains higher among youth aged between 15 to 24 by 35.8%, as well as graduates (19.7%), and women (18.3%).
These indicators come amid the government pledges to address unemployment in both rural and urban areas.
During his election campaign, Akhannouch vowed that his government program will include the creation of one million net jobs within the next five years.
