Rabat – Morocco’s National Tourist Office (ONMT) aims to capitalize on the country’s football prowess to further drive growth in the Moroccan tourism sector.

In a statement today, ONMT said that it is placing football at the heart of its promotional strategy as a means of boosting the visibility and promotion of Morocco as an essential tourist destination.

ONMT emphasized this ambition on the sidelines of the annual forum of France’s leading travel influencers, which is taking place in Rabat.

The Office  highlighted Morocco’s football assets during the event, emphasizing that the country has established itself in recent years as a “global powerhouse” in the hospitality industry.

Recalling Morocco’s heroic performances in recent prestigious sporting events, ONMT said that the country’s Atlas Lions generated over 130 million interactions around Moroccan content.

This development further motivates the national tourism office to sustain “this enthusiasm worldwide.”

ONMT also recalled during the event its 2023-2030 partnership agreement with Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) signed in June to promote the Moroccan destination through football.

“The FRMF and ONMT have agreed to use football as a tool for promoting tourism in Morocco, while also enhancing the Kingdom’s image as ‘Morocco, Land of light,’’ the press release added.

Morocco attracted over 14.5 million tourists last year, and the country seeks to attract 17.5 visitors annually by 26 million by 2030.

In recent years, Morocco’s national teams in various sports have achieved heroic performances.  At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Morocco became the first African and Arab nation ever to reach the semi-final of the global tournament.

The Atlas Lionesses also made international headlines for qualifying for the Women’s World Cup last year, where they reached the round of 16.

At the continental level, Morocco’s teams are also garnering significant recognition across all sports, including futsal. Last week, the Moroccan futsal team secured their third AFCON title in a row after defeating Angola in the final of the continental tournament.
