Rabat – The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a division of the U.S. Department of Defense, has confirmed the start of production of the advanced F-16 Viper fighter aircraft for Morocco.
This development marks a pivotal moment in the North African kingdom’s defense strategy, aiming for greater self-sufficiency and enhanced military prowess.
The acquisition of these advanced fighter jets underscores Morocco’s commitment to upgrading its defense arsenal amid an increasingly unpredictable global landscape.
The Arab Defense website reported earlier this week that Morocco, along with Taiwan, is set to acquire these highly advanced F-16Vs, known for their superior technical and tactical capabilities.
This addition places Morocco among the elite nations with cutting-edge air combat technology.
The contract, managed by American defense giant Lockheed Martin, entails the production of 90 F-16 Vipers, with 66 jets allocated to Taiwan and 24 to Morocco. Rabat is slated to receive its aircraft ahead of Taipei, with deliveries anticipated by 2026.
This deal is part of a series of defense agreements between Morocco and the United States, which have been in place since 2018, illustrating a robust strategic partnership.
The F-16 Viper distinguishes itself with numerous technological advancements, establishing it as one of the most sophisticated fighters in its class. Key features include the AN/APG-83 AESA radar, developed by Northrop Grumman, which provides exceptional resistance to electronic jamming.
This “Smart Scalable Beam Radar,” derived from systems used in the F-35 and F-22, ensures unmatched performance. In addition, the F-16 Viper’s cockpit is outfitted with a high-resolution central display that delivers real-time data, images, and videos.
With the fighter’s new improved mission computer and its Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS), pilots can target and visualize information with greater accuracy and efficiency, significantly improving combat performance.
The aircraft is also equipped with the AN/ALQ-33 Sniper targeting pod, enhancing strike precision and navigation capabilities.
Its comprehensive electronic warfare suite includes advanced detection and jamming systems, along with decoy launchers for active and passive defense.
Since 2018, Morocco has invested billions of dollars in defense agreements with the United States as part of a broader strategy to modernize its military capabilities. This substantial investment aims to boost the Kingdom’s role in regional and international security and stability.
