Rabat – Morocco became the primary exporter of cars to the European Union, overtaking traditional automotive powerhouses like China, Japan, and India, the Africa-focused business website Financial Afrik reported today.
Citing recent data by the Country’s Exchange Office, the report noted that Morocco generated a staggering $13.7 billion from the export of cars in 2023 alone, a remarkable achievement considering its relatively modest size in comparison to other automotive giants.
In addition, the report explains that the country produced a total of 535,825 vehicles during the same period. The meteoric rise in automotive exports can be attributed to several factors.
Morocco’s strategic location and favorable business environment have played a significant part in its rise as a global car manufacturing hub. With its proximity to Europe and a robust infrastructure network, Morocco has become an attractive destination for multinational automotive companies looking to establish a foothold in the region.
The influx of foreign investment and government initiatives aimed at promoting the automotive sector have fueled growth and innovation within Morocco’s automotive industry.
Companies such as Renault, Snop, and Stellantis (formerly PSA) have significantly contributed to the country’s success, leveraging its skilled workforce and competitive advantages to drive production and exports.
Morocco’s ability to adapt to changing market dynamics and capitalize on emerging trends has equally played a crucial role in its emergence to the top of the automotive export rankings.
At the national level, the industry has even overtook the phosphate industry, becoming the largest exporting sector.
By focusing on high-value segments such as construction, wiring, and interior vehicle components, Moroccan manufacturers have been able to meet the changing demands of the European market effectively.
