Rabat – A new initiative aimed at fostering internationalization among Moroccan startups was launched on Monday, July 1 at Technopark Casablanca.
Dubbed Lab Innova, the program is a collaborative effort between the Italian Trade Agency (ICE/ITA) – the trade promotion section of the Italian Embassy in Morocco – and Moroccan institutions like Technopark, StartGate at UM6P Ben Guerir, and the Moroccan Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MCISE).
The program targets 24 Moroccan startups operating in high-growth sectors like Energy, GreenTech, AgriTech, MedTech, ICT, Big Data, Fintech, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mobility.
According to Ghita Mezzour, the minister in charge of digital transition, the startups are selected through a rigorous process and will participate in an intensive training program. This initiative is designed to equip them with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of international markets.
The program itself takes a multi-pronged approach. The first phase, held from July 1-4 in Casablanca, will consist of face-to-face workshops delivered by industry experts.
These workshops will cover a range of topics critical for international success, including market research, regulatory compliance, and developing effective global business strategies.
Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in mentorship sessions and network with Italian industry leaders, gaining valuable insights and potential business connections.
The program culminates with a study tour to Italy scheduled for late October 2024. This immersive experience will provide participants with firsthand exposure to the Italian business landscape, allowing them to build relationships with potential partners and explore opportunities for market entry, the statement adds.
The launch of Lab Innova coincides with Morocco’s growing focus on fostering innovation and technology as key drivers of economic development. The program aligns with this vision by targeting high-tech sectors with significant global growth potential.
Additionally, the emphasis on internationalization reflects the understanding that Moroccan startups can achieve significant scale by accessing markets beyond their borders.
While the program’s long-term impact remains to be seen, Lab Innova represents a significant step towards strengthening the Moroccan startup ecosystem.
