Rabat – A new weather alert announced “very heavy” thunderstorms that will hit several provinces across Morocco, starting today.
A statement from the General Directorate of Meteorology said that the thunderstorms will be accompanied by hail and strong wind.
Thunderstorms producing 70 to 120 millimeters of showers will start today at 6 p.m. and will continue through Sunday in the provinces of Zagora, Tinghir, Errachidia, Ouarzazate, and Tata, the weather office reported in a red weather alert.
The same weather with showers of 30 to 70 millimeters will concern the provinces of Assa Zag, Taroudant, Midelt, and Es-Semara.
These thunderstorms are expected from today until Sunday in Figuig, Azilal, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Tiznit, Guelmim, Sidi Ifni, and Al Haouz.
The aforementioned regions witnessed heavy rainfalls throughout the week, with viral videos showing strong showers concerning several provinces.
This weather is normal in Morocco as September marks the gateway to the fall season, which sees temperatures dropping compared to August and July.
Several provinces, however, including the Rabat region witnessed increasing temperatures in the past few weeks, including this week– with temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius.
Early rainfall will be beneficial for Morocco as the country has been grappling with drought in the past years due to lack of downpours.
Last year’s late rainfall contributed to mitigating the situation but the government acknowledged challenges in water reserves, prompting the country to come up with urgent plans to tackle water scarcity.
