Rabat – In a strategic move to strengthen trade ties with Sub-Saharan Africa, Morocco has launched a new maritime route, offering truckers an alternative path to transport goods to the region.
Backed by a partnership between the Moroccan government and the British company Atlas Marine, the initiative will provide a direct sea link from Agadir to Dakar, facilitating smoother and more efficient trade across West Africa.
The new maritime route
The service is expected to benefit Moroccan truckers, particularly those transporting perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables, which require fast, reliable delivery to maintain freshness.
By offering a sea route, the new partnership aims to reduce transportation time, ensuring quicker arrivals and preserving the quality of the goods in transit.
According to converging media, the Moroccan Ministry of Transport and Logistics has recently instructed Atlas Marine to finalize the necessary processes for the project’s launch, ensuring compliance with a detailed set of operational guidelines.

The integration of maritime transport into Morocco’s logistics strategy comes at a time when land routes to Sub-Saharan Africa face numerous challenges.
According to the same sources, Driss Boutti, president of the CGEM-Souss Massa, noted that this partnership is a response to rising costs, security concerns, and unpredictable technical issues that often disrupt road transport.
The vessels employed by Atlas Marine will not only carry freight trucks and their drivers but also accommodate passengers, adding a layer of convenience and accessibility for those traveling within the region.
The new route between Agadir and Dakar is expected to reduce the reliance on overland routes, which are plagued by high fuel costs, border delays, and security risks.
