Rabat – The death toll from the tragic collapse of two residential buildings in Fez reached 19 victims, according to data from local authorities.
The two adjoining four-storey buildings, which housed eight families, collapsed last night in the Al Moustakbal neighborhood of the Al Massira district in Fez.
Sixteen other victims sustained injuries of varying degrees.
Local authorities said that security authorities and civil protection services rushed to the site of the devastating incident once they were alerted.
“All necessary preventive measures were taken, including securing the area around the collapsed buildings and evacuating residents from neighboring houses, to ensure the safety of the population in case of any potential risks that could threaten their lives,” the local authorities said.
Injured victims were taken to the University Hospital Center of Fez for necessary medical intervention.
Search operations are still ongoing to rescue and assist others who may be trapped under the rubble.
Footage online shows residents joining efforts in the search for potential victims. The incident sparked frustration and panic among Moroccans nationwide. Recent reports indicate that the collapsed buildings in Fez were not located in an old neighborhood and were relatively new, raising serious concerns and questions about the cause of the tragedy.
Morocco witnessed many similar incidents across several regions.
In March, a devastating scene repeated itself in the old quarters of Casablanca’s medina, where a two-story house suddenly collapsed, leaving three people injured with varying degrees of severity.
The incident took place near the “Shlouh mosque” in Casablanca’s Medina during Ramadan.
In May, the collapse of another building in Fez killed at least nine people. Seven others were injured.
