Rabat – Moroccan international Souffian El Karouani has joined Portuguese giants Benfica from Al Qadsiah on a season-long loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent scheduled for June 2027.
The agreement between the two clubs gives the 25-year-old left-back the opportunity to return to European football only weeks after arriving in Saudi Arabia.
El Karouani joined Al Qadsiah this summer from FC Utrecht following an impressive 2025/26 season in the Netherlands. However, his time in Saudi Arabia was short-lived, with the Moroccan yet to make an official appearance for the club.
The situation opened the door for a quick departure, allowing Benfica to move for the defender. The Portuguese club’s interest provides El Karouani with the chance to return to Europe and continue his development at a high level.
Strong numbers at Utrecht
El Karouani made a significant impact during his time with Utrecht, particularly through his attacking contributions from the left side.
The Moroccan defender made 50 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing 18 assists. His performances attracted interest from several European clubs and played a role in his subsequent move to Al Qadsiah.
His short spell in Saudi Arabia will now be followed by a return to European football with Benfica, where he will wear the No. 34 shirt.
The loan represents a quick change in direction for El Karouani, who will now look to establish himself at Benfica and continue his career in Portugal after his brief period with Al Qadsiah.
