Rabat – Moroccan forward Yanis Begraoui has become the second-highest Moroccan goalscorer in the history of the Portuguese top flight, reaching 33 goals after scoring for Estoril against Benfica on Monday.
Begraoui found the net in the 82nd minute as Estoril lost 2-1 away to Benfica in the fourth round of the Portuguese league.
Benfica had taken control of the game through Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who opened the scoring in the 40th minute, before French defender Clément Lenglet doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 51st minute.
Begraoui’s late goal reduced the deficit but was not enough to prevent Estoril from suffering defeat.
According to statistics platform Playmaker, the 25-year-old has now moved into second place among Moroccan scorers in Portuguese league history, with 33 goals.
He is behind former Moroccan international Hassan Nader, who leads the ranking with 94 goals, while Begraoui has moved one goal ahead of Redouane Hajri, who scored 32 times in the competition.
The latest achievement adds to an impressive record for Begraoui at Estoril.
Earlier this season, the Moroccan forward became the club’s all-time leading scorer in the 21st century after scoring against Famalicão in the opening round of the campaign. That goal took his Estoril tally to 32 goals in 72 appearances.
Begraoui will now look to continue his scoring run as he aims to close the gap on Nader and strengthen his place among the most prolific Moroccan players in Portuguese football history.
