Rabat – Moroccan international Nordin Amrabat has officially joined Dutch club FC Utrecht on a free transfer from Wydad AC, the club announced on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old had been training with FC Utrecht for the past two weeks before receiving the green light to join the first-team squad under head coach Anthony Correia.
Amrabat will wear the No. 39 shirt at the Dutch club. Both the player and FC Utrecht expressed their satisfaction with the agreement, which brings the experienced Moroccan back to the Netherlands.
According to reports, Amrabat’s younger brother, Sofyan Amrabat, played a role in facilitating the move. The midfielder reportedly spoke directly with FC Utrecht sporting director Jordy Zuidam about the transfer.
A return to the Eredivisie
The move marks Amrabat’s return to the Eredivisie, a competition he knows well after beginning his professional career in the Netherlands.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Amrabat developed at the Ajax academy before starting his senior career with FC Omniworld, now known as Almere City, in 2006.
He scored 14 goals in 36 appearances for the club before moving to VVV-Venlo. His performances there quickly attracted attention and earned him a move to PSV Eindhoven in 2008 for a reported €2.3 million.
At PSV, Amrabat continued to establish himself as an energetic and versatile attacking player. His performances in the Netherlands eventually opened the door to opportunities abroad.
Over the course of his career, Amrabat has played for several clubs across Europe and the Middle East, while also becoming a regular member of the Moroccan national team.
His return to Dutch football now gives him another opportunity to compete in the country where his professional journey began.
At 39, Amrabat brings significant experience to FC Utrecht as the club prepares for the new season.
