Meknes – Panathinaikos officially confirmed the signing of Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi from Spanish side Girona on Wednesday, bringing the midfielder back to Athens.
The Moroccan international spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Panathinaikos from Marseille, making this move a return to a familiar club in the Greek Super League.
The Greek club announced his return through a social media video captioned with the evocative message: “The magic is back.”
Following his standout period at Girona, the midfielder steps back into an environment where he previously thrived, having been voted Player of the Season by the Panathinaikos supporters.
Ajax had also monitored the Moroccan playmaker during the transfer window, but Ounahi ultimately chose to return to Panathinaikos.
According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, the transfer fee for Ounahi’s move to Panathinaikos stands at €15 million.
The deal includes a sell-on clause, ensuring Girona receives a percentage of any future transfer fee.
Ounahi made 24 La Liga appearances for Girona last season, scoring five goals and providing two assists before sealing his return to Panathinaikos.
On the international stage, Ounahi was a standout performer for Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, anchoring the midfield throughout their run to the quarter-finals.
The midfielder’s tournament highlight came in the Round of 16 against Canada, where he scored twice in a 3-0 victory to become the first Moroccan player ever to net a knockout-stage brace.
