Casablanca – Morocco saw one of its most successful days at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games on Wednesday, collecting five gold medals across gymnastics, athletics and karate.
Morocco’s strongest showing came on the track, where three athletes reached the top step of the podium in a single day.
Yassine Hssine claimed the men’s 200m title, adding a second gold to the one he previously won in the 100m.
Ismail Manyani followed with victory in the men’s 400m hurdles, before Salah Eddine Ben Yazide secured another Moroccan triumph in the 3000m steeplechase.
Ben Yazide finished ahead of compatriot Mohamed Tindouft, giving Morocco both gold and silver in the event, while Algeria’s Omar Seraich took bronze.
The success is another reminder of Morocco’s long-standing strength in athletics.
The sport has traditionally been one of the country’s most successful disciplines on the international stage, producing Olympic and world champions including Hicham El Guerrouj, Nezha Bidouane, Said Aouita and Soufiane El Bakkali.
Moroccan athletes have won the vast majority of the country’s Olympic medals in athletics, including all eight of its Olympic gold medals through 2024.
Hamza Hossaini captured gold in the men’s artistic gymnastics vault.
Karate then added another title through Mehdi Sriti, who defeated Libya’s Mohamed Ahmed Aboudabous 5-1 in the men’s under-84kg final.
Sriti had reached the final after beating Albania’s Milos Gashi 4-0 in the semifinals.
With five gold medals secured in one day, Morocco continued to strengthen its medal campaign in Taranto, with athletics once again playing a central role in the country’s success.
