Ceuta Crisis: 2 Right-Wing Spanish Politicians Tear Moroccan Flag

Rabat – The migration crisis in Ceuta has increasingly spilled into Spain’s political and public debate, with demonstrations taking place across the country and tensions extending beyond criticism of the Spanish government to confrontational rhetoric directed at Morocco.

At a demonstration outside Spain’s Congress of Deputies in Madrid, Pedro Chaparro, president of National Democracy (Democracia Nacional), and the party’s vice president, Gonzalo Martín, were seen tearing a Moroccan flag. The incident was captured on video as protesters gathered over the handling of the Ceuta migration crisis.

The tearing of the Moroccan flag marks a particularly provocative moment in the protests, turning political opposition over migration into an act directed at a national symbol. It also comes amid a broader wave of demonstrations in Spain, where tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Wednesday in support of Ceuta and to criticise Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s handling of the crisis.

Around 50,000 people reportedly demonstrated in Madrid, while protests were also held in other Spanish cities.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stressed in parliament on Thursday that there was no concrete evidence that Morocco orchestrated the mass crossing, dismissing earlier allegations that a police report had linked Morocco to the mass migration crisis. The distinction is important as political rhetoric surrounding the crisis becomes increasingly aggressive.

Criticism of migration policy and demands for stronger border controls are legitimate subjects of political debate, but attacks on Morocco and the desecration of its national flag represent a separate and more inflammatory dimension of the dispute.

For Morocco, the scenes in Madrid are particularly sensitive. Whatever disagreements exist over migration policy or Spain’s management of Ceuta, tearing the Moroccan flag crosses from political criticism into an overtly hostile gesture towards Morocco and its people.

As the political debate intensifies, the challenge for both countries will be to address the migration crisis without allowing it to further fuel hostility between Moroccan and Spanish societies or undermine the broader relationship between Rabat and Madrid.
