Liberia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Rabat – Liberia has renewed its firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara, following talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers in Rabat on Thursday.

Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti reaffirmed Monrovia’s position after meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita.

Nyanti also said Liberia, which currently serves as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, will work alongside Morocco and support it within the UN body during discussions on the Western Sahara issue scheduled for October 2026.

The minister further emphasized the close relations between Morocco and Liberia, expressing her country’s intention to strengthen bilateral cooperation under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Liberian President Joseph Boakai.

She identified diplomacy, culture and the economy as key areas for expanding cooperation between the two countries, with the aim of serving the interests of both nations and their peoples.

Liberia’s latest position comes amid renewed statements from African and international partners backing Morocco’s territorial integrity and its Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.

Earlier this week, Guinea reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and described autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to the dispute. It also pointed to its Consulate General in Dakhla as a concrete expression of its position on the issue.

Morocco and Liberia have also been strengthening their military cooperation. The two countries signed a military cooperation agreement in Rabat on October 21, 2025, covering training, exercises, technical assistance, military health, and the exchange of experience and expertise.

The two countries moved to implement the agreement on Tuesday, when senior military officials from Morocco and Liberia met in Rabat to discuss concrete areas of cooperation and advance the implementation of the defense pact.
