Rabat — Moroccan security services thwarted on Saturday an international drug trafficking attempt, seizing a shipment of more than eight tons of cannabis at the Safi maritime port.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today that the security operation led to the seizure of a drug shipment that consisted of 199 bundles prepared for international smuggling via sea routes.
DGSN further stated the drugs were in a Moroccan-registered cargo truck, intercepted by Moroccan police shortly after entering the Atlantic port of Safi.
As part of the security operation, police arrested 21 individuals aged between 24 and 48 suspected of being involved with drug trafficking and the criminal network connected to the case.
DGSN emphasized that an investigation into the case had been ongoing for several weeks, since police received information about a criminal network planning a significant international drug smuggling operation.
Police put all suspects in custody pending further investigation to determine the full regional and international scope of the drug trafficking attempt.
The security operation is part of DGSN’s ongoing effort to combat international drug smuggling.
In 2023, police recorded and processed 99,513 drug trafficking cases as well as arrested 130,212 individuals for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
At that time, police seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis, representing a 17% decrease compared to a year earlier.
