Rabat – The Royal Moroccan Navy and the Spanish Navy carried out joint military exercises in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea as part of NATO’s SeaGuardian operation.
According to EuropaSur, the drills aimed to enhance regional maritime security and address threats, including terrorism.
The Moroccan frigate Tariq Ibn Ziyad and the Spanish frigate Reina Sofia participated in the exercises, performing tactical maneuvers and simultaneous ship inspection operations.
These activities focused on strengthening military coordination and improving readiness in shared maritime zones.
Earlier this week, the Reina Sofia docked at the port of Tangier for an official visit attended by Omar Moro, president of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, along with Moroccan and Spanish military and diplomatic officials.
The Tariq Ibn Ziyad is one of the most advanced vessels in the Royal Moroccan Navy, equipped with multiple combat systems and high capabilities for surveillance, air defense, and anti-submarine warfare.
It plays a key role in protecting strategic passages in the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Meanwhile, the Reina Sofia is one of Spain’s oldest active frigates, with experience in international missions and participation in NATO and EU operations.
The joint exercises demonstrate ongoing collaboration between Morocco and Spain to secure critical maritime routes and maintain regional stability.
Military cooperation has been one of the areas that Morocco and Spain have worked to strengthen over the past year.
Morocco and Spain also continue to expand collaboration in trade, energy, and migration management, reinforcing their strategic partnership.
