Rabat – In a significant development in the Qatar World Cup ticket scandal, the Casablanca Injunction Court sentenced on Friday a senior sports figure and a sports journalist to prison terms and the payment of considerable fines for their roles in the controversy surrounding the manipulation and illegal distribution of tickets for highly-anticipated matches of the Moroccan national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The sentenced football manager, whose identity has been withheld, received a sentence of one and a half years in prison and the payment of a substantial fine of MAD 2,002,022 ($202,804). In addition, a sports journalist affiliated with a private radio channel was handed a 10-month prison sentence and an equally substantial fine. At the request of the journalist’s legal team, the court had initially postponed the case to provide ample time for the defense to prepare arguments.
The case dates back to May of this year when the National Brigade of the Judicial Police referred the defendants to the public prosecutor at the Casablanca Court of Appeal. The investigation was launched based on suspicions of their involvement in the so-called “World Cup ticket scandal.”
The scandal revolved around the illicit manipulation and sale of tickets intended for Moroccan fans attending Atlas Lions’ games at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. These tickets were meant to be distributed free of charge to fans to promote their participation in the event to cheer up, motivate the Moroccan national team.

During investigations into the case, it was uncovered that the accused individuals were part of a network that illegally collected the tickets and then sold them for exorbitant sums of money on the black market.
This unethical and profit-driven scheme not only undermined the fair distribution of tickets but also exploited the enthusiasm of devoted Atlas Lions fans who were eagerly looking forward to supporting their team in the prestigious global event.
