Rabat – The Republic of Guinea has reiterated its strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing its autonomy plan as the only “realistic” and “credible solution” to the territorial dispute.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, Guinean Foreign Minister Morisanda Kouyate praised Morocco’s efforts to find a practical and sustainable solution to the dispute.

The statement was issued on the sidelines of a meeting between Kouyate and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Rabat, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The joint statement also recalled the opening of a Guinean Consulate General in Dakhla in January 2020, reflecting the historical position of Guinea in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Morocco has been gaining increasing international recognition and support for its territorial integrity in recent years, with many nations around the world including several African countries opening diplomatic representations in the country’s southern provinces.

The latest addition to the growing list is Cape Verde, which opened its consulate general in the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla in May 2022.

The Republic of Chad has also announced its intention to open a consulate general in Dakhla, further cementing its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The announcement was made in May 2022, as Chad joins a growing number of countries that have pledged their support for the North African country’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.

Morocco’s stance received a massive boost in 2020 after the United States recognized the country’s sovereignty over its southern territories. In January 2021, the US announced plans to open a consulate in Dakhla, further cementing its support for Morocco.

The opening of diplomatic representations in the southern regions of Morocco consolidates Morocco’s stance and promotes economic development in the area.

Morocco has invested heavily in its southern provinces, with the government launching several development projects to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and boost economic growth.
