Rabat – The Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) has called on the majority parties of the government to hold an urgent meeting to discuss the delayed rainfall in Morocco this year and its implications for the country’s agriculture.

Among the required measures according to the PAM is to provide financial and material assistance to farmers and residents of rural Morocco in an effort to minimize the effect that the lack of precipitation has had on them.

Activists recently amplified calls for officials and authorities to investigate  the problems that plague Morocco’s secluded rural regions. These regions suffer from poor infrastructure and gaps in the social opportunities compared to more urban regions.

A lack of rain in Morocco has significantly impacted the country’s agricultural output, which relies heavily on rain in underdeveloped rural regions.

PAM says the meeting it has requested is concerned with discussing this issue, as well as others that are directly affecting rural residents of Morocco. They are seeking solutions to resolve these pressing concerns in the most efficient ways.

The party has called on its members and on regional authorities to pay special attention to the demands of rural residents, and do everything possible to ease some of their worries.

Government Spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said on February 10 that the government intends to launch programs to help agricultural workers and residents of rural areas to overcome this and other problems that they face.

Activists have recently intensified their demands to give proper attention to rural areas in Morocco, which have historically been secluded and neglected by governmental authorities, a fact which has been put in the spotlight following the recent death of five-year-old Rayan.

The development lag in the country’s rural areas is partially due to the inconsistent output of the agricultural sector which makes up the primary source of income for the regions’ economies. People have also cited the lack of educational services, healthcare and social security, and lacking transport and telecommunication infrastructure as pressing issues to address.
