Rabat, April 23, 2013 (MAP)
Editorials of this Tuesday April 23, 2013 are commenting on latest developments in the Sahara issue and the US proposal to alter the prerogatives of the UN Sahara mission to embrace human rights monitoring.
“L’opinion” notes that the US proposal has triggered an intense outcry both inside and outside Morocco, stressing that Morocco showed a general mobilization that reminds of the enthusiastic mobilization to take part in the 1975 green march that freed the Sahara from Spanish occupation.
The US proposal has consolidated Moroccans’ resolve to defend their territorial integrity while several western countries, including France and Spain also protested against the US project.
The editorial of “Bayane Al Yaoum” calls political parties to regain their diplomatic role on the regional and international scenes in order to contribute to consolidating networks supporting the country’s causes.
The editorialist also deems that other organizations such as those representing writers, journalists, artists, business operators and women should be more involved to express independent stances on the Moroccan people’s issues, including the Sahara issue and other supreme interests.
On its part, “Al Ahdath Al Maghribia” rings an optimistic tone and notes that the intensive diplomatic actions conducted to foil the US proposal are starting to bear fruits as Spain and France have formally rejected the US proposal while Britain, Russia and China expressed understanding for the Moroccan stance.
The editorialist points out that in addition to the unanimity of the internal front, the Moroccan diplomacy owns the needed means and evidence to foil the American proposal, noting that Morocco is entitled to request the departure of the UN mission in case its mission is altered.
Stressing that Morocco is not shying away from human rights respect as the constitution clearly stipulates the Kingdom’s commitment to promote human rights and international humanitarian law, the editorialist calls for an “innovating” diplomacy to defend Morocco with resolve and openness.
