Rabat – The National Agency of Telecommunication Regulations (ANRT) reported Monday that the number of internet users in Morocco increased by 34.4 percent in 2016. The total number of internet users is now 13.69 million users.
The entire sector is experiencing growth. The number of mobile users increased by 3.65 percent, connecting more Moroccans to each other and the rest of the globe through text messages, phone calls, and the internet.
The average internet bill in Morocco increased by 4 percent this year, to 24 MAD per month. The average mobile user spends 13 percent more on mobile data this year, at 17 MAD per month.
The UN reported in September of 2015 that billions of people around the world are still living without internet access. The report stated that “57 per cent of the world’s people remain offline and unable to take advantage of the enormous economic and social benefits the Internet can offer.”
The UN 2030 Agenda includes strategies to reduce barriers to internet access. According to their survey of internet access around the world, the greatest barriers include lack of necessary infrastructure and affordability.
Higher rates of internet access have been found to lead to higher literacy rates in developing countries, based on Stanford research in Africa. Schools with limited resources can greatly benefit from internet access, which can provide inexpensive and accessible educational resources. In addition, businesses may benefit from advertising and networking available online.
