Rabat – Despite efforts to fight against child marriage and the fact that it is illegal for individuals under the age of 18 to marry in Morocco, the practice remains a serious problem in the country.
UNICEF’s latest report titled “The State of the World’s Children 2023” indicated that child marriage among females in Morocco reached 14% between 2015 and 2021.
Published on May 1, the report underlined the consequences of early, and often forced, marriage on young girls, including sexual and physical abuse.
“While the practice is more widespread among girls, marriage in childhood is a rights violation for both sexes,” said the report.
In addition, it noted that 64% of Moroccan girls aged between 15 and 19 consider a husband to be justified in hitting or beating his wife.

Justifications of wife-beating among Moroccan female adolescents include the wife burning food, arguing with her husband, going out without permission, neglecting her children, or refusing sexual relations, according to the report.
The issue of child marriage in Morocco is fueled by a wide range of factors, including poverty, traditional beliefs, and limited educational opportunities for girls.
Many Moroccan families view marriage as a way to secure their daughter’s future and alleviate economic pressures, often leading to young girls being forced to marry much older men in exchange for dowries.
Another key factor in child marriage in Morocco is the country’s patriarchal culture, which places a high value on virginity and chastity. This pushes families to pressure their daughters into marriage at a young age to ensure their sexual purity and protect their honor.
This subjects young girls to sexual and physical abuse within marriage, all of which are justified by society.
Morocco has launched many initiatives to address the issue of child marriage. This includes promoting girls’ education, empowering young women, and changing traditional attitudes toward marriage and gender roles.
