Rabat – German club Bayern Munich has taken issue with Moroccan footballer Noussair Mazraoui’s social media posts supporting Palestine amid the escalating violence against Palestinians from Israel.
In response to Mazraoui’s pro-Palestine posts, the club management released a statement saying that it promptly contacted the player and expressed its intention to engage in an “in-depth personal discussion” with him upon his return to Munich.
The player is currently in Africa alongside the Moroccan national football team.
The club reiterated its commitment to certain values, emphasizing its solidarity with Israel amid the cycle of violence that it described as “terrorist attacks on Israel.”
“Everyone, including each employee and each player, knows the values that FC Bayern stands for. We have already made these values public and unequivocally expressed them,” the club said.
The club’s statement adds to the attacks and infringement on freedom of expression that Mazraoui has been facing from German media for expressing his personal views.
In addition, Bayern Munich’s statement reflects a bias seen in many Western institutions in characterizing the conflict, portraying Palestinian resistance fighters as “terrorists” while sympathizing with Israel.
German outlet Bild criticized Mazraoui’s stance and accused him of “supporting terrorism.” The publication also called on the player to distance himself from the “bloodshed caused by Hamas” and demanded an explanation for his views.
Critics stressed the importance of understanding the larger context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, encompassing decades of occupation and violence against Palestinians.
