Ouarzazate – The Noor project is a good example that encourages the development of the energy potential in the continent, President of the African development Bank (AfDB) group, Akinwumi Adesina, said Friday in the southern city of Ouarzazate.
“The solar project Noor is a good example for Africa that encourages the development of different energy potentials in the continent, which amount to almost 11 terawatts”, the AfDB President said on the sidelines of a field visit to the site of the solar plant in Ouarzazate.
He underlined that the project of renewable energy will optimize the use of solar energy, providing electricity to at least 600,000 people.
The AfDB President also noted that the peculiarity of the project lies in its ability to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to 3.8 million tonnes per year by 2020.
Thanks to this massive project, Morocco will ultimately provide 18 pc of its annual electricity generation, supply power to 1.1 million Moroccans, and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 760,000 tons per year, it adds.
With only the first stage complete, the plant can already be seen from space and, when finished, will occupy 45 square miles. Morocco is also home to Africa’s largest wind farm: a 301-megawatt facility that began operating in December 2014.
