Rabat – Mutiny and acts of vandalism, that took place on Thursday night in the Ain Sbaa Youth rehabilitation Center in Casablanca, caused important material damage, and wounded civil servants working in the facility in addition to security officers who intervened to bring the situation under control, said on Friday the general delegation for penitentiaries and reintegration (DGAPR).
Vandalism acts by inmates damaged the center’s administrative department, and destroyed offices, the communication network, and equipment including documents related to the civil servants’ affairs, prison and medical records and prisoners’ legal documents, it said in a statement.
In addition, fire extinction equipment, landline phones, televisions, sport equipment, beds and sheets were also destroyed. Five rooms were burnt down in one of the center’s pavilions, it added.
Offices and equipments belonging to the Mohammed VI Foundation for Inmates Reintegration were damaged, including books, music instruments, classrooms and the multimedia library.
Surveillance cameras, the facility’s main gate, a bus and a vehicle for prisoners transportation were also torched, in addition to the destruction of an ambulance, service cars, motor bicycles and a civil defense truck, the statement noted.
Several civil servants and security officers were injured during the intervention to stop the mutiny and restore order and security in the facility. They are five policemen, three members of civil defense, six members of auxiliary forces and five DGAPR civil servants. Nine inmates were asphyxiated and rushed to the hospital, and were discharged afterwards except one, the same source said.
Given the fact that the infrastructure and equipment were very damaged, especially rooms that were set ablaze, the general delegation decided to transfer a number of detainees to other establishments. Direct communication channels with the prisoners’ families were opened in addition to organizing an open visit for them.
The general delegation said that it will open an administrative investigation once order and security are restored inside the center in order to determine the causes behind these incidents and take the necessary administrative measures. The competent judiciary authorities will also open an investigation on this matter, the statement concluded.
