Casablanca — Starting November 7th, Marrakech residents will have access to the city’s new city bike program, called “Medina Bike,” which is not unlike other city bike programs currently available in many European and American cities.
The city bikes will be provided by Smoove, a French corporation, as it won a competition organized by the United Nations Organization for Industrial Development.
All attendees and Marrakech residents will have access to the bikes during the COP22, which will be held from November 7 to November 18. But the eco-friendly project will also continue on for at least 5 years after the COP22 climate change conference, which is expected to receive more than 40,000 attendees.
During the COP22, 300 bikes will be available across ten bike stations, according to Smoove.
Smoove also took into account the significance of the bike in Marrakech culture. “In Marrakech, the bike has been a principal mode of transportation but, just like in France, it has since become less popular. We can actually recognize real Marrakchis by the presence of a bike in front of their homes!” said Smoove in a statement.
The “Medina Bike” program is only one of many eco-friendly initiatives made by COP22, but it is certainly a favorite that will continue to better the lives of Marrakchis way beyond November 18.
