Rabat – The media landscape is mourning prominent Palestinian journalist Jamal Rayyan, who was one of the most iconic faces of Al Jazeera since its launch.
Rayyan died today at the age of 72, Al Jazeera reported.
The journalist had a long and influential media career, regarded as a pioneer in Arab broadcast journalism.Â
He was notably known for his commanding on-air presence and his role in delivering the channel’s very first news bulletins.
Rayyan made his debut as a presenter for news and political shows on Jordan TV and radio in 1974.
He also served in the media in Arab and international media platforms, including the South Korean Broadcasting Corporation, Emirates TV, and the BBC Arabic.
Rayyan worked as an anchor for BBC Arabic World Service in London from 1994 to 1996. In Abu Dhabi, Rayyan spent from 1989 to 1994 and 1997 to 1999, where he worked as a news anchor and political program moderator for Al Oula Television Network.
Rayyan joined Al Jazeera in 1996 and quickly became one of the network’s most prominent journalists. He served as an anchor from 1996 to 1997 and also assisted in the channel’s creation and training.
Among other notable qualities, his eloquence and distinctive commanding voice on-air will be remembered in every Arab home among families who watch Al Jazeera.
