Rabat – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited Polisario leader Brahim Ghali upon his return from Spain.
Videos show Tebboune along with Said Chanegriha, the chief of staff of Algeria’s National People’s Army (ANP), visiting Polisario leader, who used a fake Algerian identity and passport to enter Spain under the name of Mohamed Ben Battouche.
Tebboune’s visit was televised, with the press showing him expressing satisfaction with the state of health of Brahim Ghali.
For his part, the Polisario leader also expressed gratitude for Algeria’s help.
“Cases of truth are a priority for Algeria,” Tebboune said, referring to Algeria’s support for Polisario’s statehood aspirations in Western Sahara.
Algeria’s government supports Polisario’s independence claims against Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces.
Algeria also finances, arms, and trains Polisario militias.
Tebboune’s government arranged for Ghali’s hospitalization with Pedro Sanchez’ government, an action that did not go unnoticed in Morocco.
During the televised visit, Tebboune expressed gratitude to Spain for accepting Algeria’s request to receive Ghali for hospitalization.
Ghali is currently at the Mohamed Seghir Nekkach military hospital in Algiers, where he will continue receiving medical care.
Polisario members said today that Ghali’s condition is stable and his hospitaation was no longer necessary.
Ghali left Spain after a Spanish judge dismissed all criminal charges against him.
The Spanish court allowed the Polisario chief to travel back to Algeria despite the victims’ plea to hold the separatist leader accountable for several charges, including genocide, rape, kidnapping, and illegal detention.
The Spanish decision angered not only the victims but also Moroccans, many of whom have been calling on Morocco’s government to sever ties with Spain.
