Denver – A substantial number of countries have released national statements of support for Morocco, in a stunning demonstration of international solidarity.
In addition to several international organizations that released joint statements affirming their support for Morocco, a list of countries stepped up to give their individual political endorsement of Morocco at a UN meeting yesterday.
The statements were given to the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24), a committee within the UN that primarily focuses on decolonization efforts around the world. Statements were given by Antigua and Barbuda, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Dominica, Senegal, Saudi Arabia and the Ivory Coast during the meeting. All countries supported a solution to the Western Sahara situation, and many specifically praised the Moroccan initiative for autonomy as the best solution for long-term peace in Western Sahara.
As well as calling for a long-term solution to the Western Sahara crisis, countries like Bahrain also explicitly expressed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and urged the international community to work “with respect for international legality,” as Spain is accused of trying to move the bilateral crisis into a broader EU issue.
The countries also praised Morocco for several different achievements such as its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting “in particular the vaccination program in the Sahara region.” The group emphasized “efforts made by Morocco to develop the Moroccan Sahara region and improve economic and social conditions,” and “serious and credible efforts” that Morocco has provided in its attempts to find a solution to the political crisis with Spain.
The group of countries provided a very different story than the skewed narrative presented by Spain and its political and media agents.
The support of these countries in today’s UN committee meeting is one of many shows of support that Rabat has received in the past few weeks on the international geopolitical stage. As more political institutions begin to support Moroccan efforts towards sovereignty, it is unclear what actions Madrid will take in its efforts to revive the damaged relationship.
