Rabat – King Mohammed VI has ordered a royal pardon for 1,243 convicts on the eve of Throne Day, which will take place this Friday, July 30.
A press release from the Ministry of Justice announced this on July 29 that the list of beneficiaries from the royal pardon includes convicts in detention and on provisional release.
The list includes 19 inmates who received a pardon for the remainder of their prison term. An additional 1,086 prisoners will have their terms reduced as a result of the royal pardon.
The sentences of three incarcerated people were also commuted from life imprisonment to fixed prison terms.
The beneficiaries also include 135 “free” convicted individuals.
Approximately 36 prisoners benefited from a pardon over their remaining prison terms while on provisional release. Eight inmates benefited from a pardon over the remainder of their prison time, while their fines were maintained.
Five inmates benefited from both a pardon over their prison terms and the cancelation of their fines, while 92 prisoners saw their fines canceled.
Two incarcerated people benefited from a pardon over their remaining prison terms and fines.
Royal pardons are a customary occurence on religious and national holidays.
Festivities for Throne Day this will be postponed according to a statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery, due to the recent spike in COVID19 cases in the country.
