Denver – The US Embassy in Morocco offered congratulations to Morocco and Israel, as the Kingdom welcomes Yair Lapid to his first diplomatic trip to Rabat as Israel’s Foreign Minister.
In a post on its official facebook page, the US embassy labelled the diplomatic trip as a chance to “create new opportunities for peace and prosperity in the region.” The message also highlighted the benefits of the resumption of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel, drawing particular attention to “commercial flights, economic cooperation, and the opening of liaison offices.”
The US played a major role in the Isareli-Morocco agreement to establish ties, assisting the two countries on their path to cooperation late last year. Part of the US-brokered Morocco-Israel agreement was the US’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Since signing a tripartite declaration with the US in December 2020, Israeli and Moroccan officials have multiplied efforts to implement a range of initiatives to reignite bilateral relations between their two nations. Several business leaders have also expressed interest in starting programs to encourage Israeli investments in Morocco.
During FM Lapid’s two-day trip to Rabat, the Israeli FM’s schedule includes a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Minister of Tourism Nadia Alaoui, and the signing of three separate bilateral agreements with the Moroccan government.
Lapid will also be present during the inauguration of Israel’s new diplomatic mission to Morocco, after which he will attend a final press conference in Casablanca.
Analysts expect Moroccan-Israeli economic relations to deepen in the coming months. Israeli exports to Morocco grew by $5 million between the first half of 2020 and the first half of 2021, and projections are that the number will reach $250 million annually.
