Rabat – The Moroccan Ministry of Health has denied “fake news” suggesting that the country is adopting new measures to ease its COVID-19 restrictions.
Rumore published on social media suggest that Morocco will end or review its night curfew given the noted decrease in its COVID-19 numbers in recent weeks.
“While the Ministry of Health warns citizens not to follow and spread these malicious rumors, it confirms that the decisions that are taken are announced and published through its official channels of communication, as well as the public media,” the ministry said in a statement today.
The ministry warned that it holds the right to file a judicial case against anyone who is in charge of fabricating rumors and attribute it to the health department.
Vowing to take legal actions against people who disseminate fake news, the statement warned that the ministry might file a legal suit against those fabricating rumors and attributing them to the health ministry.
Morocco has been under a state of emergency since March 2020, and the government has renewed the measure monthly as part of its efforts to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The measure also allows authorities to take proactive actions in the case of the deterioration of the epidemiological situation.
In addition to the usual social distancing measures and the wearing of masks in public spaces, Morocco is currently under a night curfew that starts at 9 p.m. and ends at 5 a.m.
