Rabat – Moroccan security services and the Spanish Civil Guard thwarted an irregular migration attempt on Thursday, September 30, to the Spanish enclave of Melilla.
Over 700 migrants attempted to enter Melilla on Thursday.
A statement from the Spanish central government in the Spanish enclave said the migrants attempted to enter the border perimeter between Morocco and Melilla.
“The migrants were perfectly organized and used military tactics,” El Faro de Melilla reported.
The migrants were divided into groups in an effort to divert attention from them.
Joint coordination between Morocco and Spain, however, managed to prevent the migrants from reaching the fence, foiling the irregular migration attempt.
In recent weeks, massive irregular migration attempts took place in both the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and Melilla.
Joint security collaboration between Spain and Morocco foiled the attempts.
On September 28-29, hundreds of young people and minors attempted to leave Morocco’s northern coast Fnideq to the enclave of Ceuta.
Moroccan security forces prevented migrants from crossing over to the enclave.
Spanish forces were also deployed along the border to thwart the attempt.
Spain and Morocco regularly collaborate in joint operations to prevent major irregular migration influx entering into the Spanish enclaves.
Since 2017, Morocco has prevented over 14,000 unauthorized migration attempts.
Morocco has dismantled over 5,000 human trafficking networks and rescued over 80,500 migrants at sea.
