Denver – King Mohammed VI sent today a congratulatory message to the Spanish monarch in celebration of Spain’s National Day.
King Mohammed VI’s message celebrated bilateral relations between Morocco and Spain, and noted the shared cultural and historical ties between the two countries.
“I take this opportunity to express to you my great pride in the solid bonds of friendship that bind us and our families, and in the distinguished relations between the two Kingdoms of Morocco and Spain characterized by fruitful cooperation and mutual appreciation, assuring you of my keenness to continue our joint work to advance them,” King Mohammed VI said.
Spain’s National Day is annually celebrated in commemoration of the country’s historical and cultural identity. The date corresponds with Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas in 1492.
King Mohammed VI sent the celebratory message to Spain as relations between the two countries remain lukewarm. Late last month, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Albares traveled to Algeria to discuss the continuation of a natural gas pipeline that would effectively exclude Morocco after the end of a current tripartite agreement set to expire this month.
In April of this year, both countries allegedly cooperated in a plot to move Polisario leader Brahim Ghali to Spain for COVID-19 treatments. Rabat, which hoped to see Ghali prosecuted over war crime allegations, protested the decision and effectively ceased official communications with Madrid, cooling relations since then.
