Rabat – Residents of the commune of Dar Bouazza in the province of Nouaceur in the Casablanca-Settat region witnessed bloody clashes on Sunday, November 28, between supporters of Casablanca’s leading football teams Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) and Raja Athletic Club (RCA).
In a report, Moroccan news outlet 2M quoted the Royal Gendarmerie as saying that “these acts of hooliganism caused material damage.”
The violence resulted in many injuries among supporters and caused traffic interruptions on the coastal road leading to Dar Bouazza.
Local residents and elements of the gendarmerie were also wounded during the exchange of stones between supporters of the Casablanca clubs.
According to 2M, the Royal Gendarmerie was able to put an end to the riot and is now carrying out investigations to shed light on the incident and identify the people involved.
This isn’t the first time that football supporters have caused material damage to public and private properties.
In 2016, RCA and WAC were both punished by the Royal Federation of Moroccan Football (FRMF) for repeated violent clashes between their fans during and after matches. The clashes caused a number of deaths and injured many other people, including police officers.
FRMF has banned fans from attending football games amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, which has resulted in decreasing the numbers of violent street clashes between rival fans. Teams continue to play behind closed doors as FRMF has released no official statement to open stadiums to large audiences.
