Rabat – The African Union issued a statement today to condemn the recent Houthi “terrorist attack” that targeted civilians in the United Arab Emirates.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission stressed that he had “followed the details of the terrorist attack that targeted civilian sites in the UAE.”
In a communique, Faki Mahamat emphasized that he “strongly condemned this heinous criminal act,” expressing his condolences to the high authorities of the UAE, the Emirati people and the families of the victims.
He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims and reiterated his call to “redouble international solidarity against terrorism, of which the African continent is the first victim in many areas.”
King Mohammed VI similarly condemned the drone attack and reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to “supporting measures taken by the UAE to defend their territory and the peace of their people in the face of the despicable attacks by the Houthi militia and its supporters.”
Houthi forces in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the drone attack in Abu Dhabi that killed three people and injured six others. The deadly attack is one of many that Houthi forces have carried in the region.
The Emarati government said that the move will not go “unpunished,” emphasizing that it reserves the right to respond to “these terrorist attacks and criminal escalation.”
Regional tensions continue to escalate as the Houthis threaten to launch strikes against the UAE after losing ground in a key fight in Yemen’s civil war.
The UAE has been at war in Yemen since 2015 and is considered as a pivotal member of the Saudi-led coalition that launched attacks against the Houthis after the group invaded the capital of Yemen.
