Rabat – After examining the tight link between water security, food, and energy security, Nizar Baraka, the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party (PI) and the Minister of Equipment and Water, has underlined the importance of taking a holistic approach to integrated water management to meet Morocco’s water needs amid climate change-induced challenges.

The Istiqlalien group of Parliament’s Unity and Egalitarianism organized a study day on Friday, March 11 in Marrakech under the theme of “Water Policy in Morocco.” The goal of the event was to engage with residents’ problems and provide solutions for overcoming Morocco’s water scarcity crisis.

Nizar Baraka emphasized the need for bolstering Morocco’s water security in the face of climate change, underlining the country’s accomplishments in the field of mobilizing all water resources for development under King Mohammed VI’s leadership.

Water efficiency includes modernizing and strengthening the water supply network, protecting groundwater from overexploitation, reducing excessive use of water resources in some economic sectors, and raising citizen awareness to change daily water consumption practices, Baraka explained.

For his part, Nourdin Moudian, the president of the Istiqlalien group of Unity and Egalitarianism in Parliament, spoke of the urgency of increasing investments in devising an effective water policy. With the study day taking place at a time when Morocco is experiencing an “uncomfortable” situation due to drought and scarcity of water resources, he noted, there is a need for the development of a medium- and long-term water resource management strategy to effectively tackle water scarcity.

He explained that the implementation of such a strategy necessitates the collaboration of all actors and stakeholders, and he praised the government’s mobilization under King Mohammed VI’s instructions for the management of the difficult situation brought about by water scarcity due to delayed rain.

The study day was also marked by a presentation by the Secretary-General of the Tensift Water Basin Agency (ABHT), Mohamed Chatoui, on the missions of the water basin agencies in Morocco.
