Rabat – Security services in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region in southern Morocco thwarted several irregular migration attempts this week.
One of the security operations was on Saturday, with security services intercepting a number of Canary Island-bound irregular migrants.
During the operation, security services arrested 54 sub-Saharan migrants and seized a boat as well as10 containers of gasoline.
Police thwarted the other attempts on Friday and Saturday in the city of Laayoune, where security services arrested 106 would-be migrants.
The migrants were waiting for “the right moment” to take a boat traveling illegally towards the Canary Islands, state media MAP reported today.
In addition, security services arrested 76 sub-Saharan migrants following the abortion of three irregular migration attempts in the province of Tarfaya.
During the operation, local police seized two inflatable boats, as well nine cans of gasoline of 25 liters each.
Security services in southern Morocco have recently intensified operations to tackle irregular migration attempts in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.
The efforts are part of Morocco’s approach to tackling undocumented migration.
Notably, the latest annual report of Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) has documented that security services across Morocco dismantled in the past year 150 criminal networks active in organizing irregular migration.
In addition, notes the document, police arrested 12, 231 would-be migrants and 415 suspects for organizing irregular migration attempts.
National police also seized 742 forged travel documents, 67 inflatable boats, in addition to 65 vehicles used for displacing people for irregular migration.
