Rabat – Muslims in the US are expected to celebrate the first day of Eid Al Fitr on May 2, 2022,  according to the Fiqh Council of North America.

Ramadan 2022, corresponding to 1443 AH, began on Saturday, April 2 in the United States. The holy month is expected to last 30 days.

Eid Al Fitr is a religious celebration that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a month where Muslims fast from dawn till dusk, and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.

Also known as the “festival of breaking the fast”, Eid Al Fitr is Allah’s reward for those who fasted during Ramadan.

On the first day of Eid Al Fitr, Muslims wake up early in the morning, cleanse themselves and wear new and clean clothes to perform the Eid communal prayer, followed by a special breakfast.

Muslims spend the day with friends, extended family, and loved ones, eating festive meals, exchanging gifts, and praying at mosques. Traditionally, Muslim nations celebrate Eid Al Fitr for three days.

Worshippers are expected to be charitable and help those in need by performing “Zakat Al Fitr” prior to the Eid Al Fitr celebrations. Zakat Al Fitr is usually handed out on the last day of Ramadan.

Acts of charity are obligatory upon Muslims who are able to do so, especially during Ramadan, which is an opportunity to become closer to God and express gratitude to him, as well as gain a better understanding of the suffering of those in need.

Eid Al Fitr falls on different dates each year because Muslims follow the Islamic calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar. For this reason, Eid Al Fitr shifts by 10 to 11 days each year, falling earlier each year.

The Fiqh Council of North Africa’s moon-sighting committee will confirm the official day of Eid Al Fitr in the US as the end of Ramadan approaches.
