Rabat – Morocco’s Royal Navy seized on Wednesday 1.5 tonnes of Cannabis during an anti-drug trafficking security operation off the coast of Al Hoceima in northern Morocco.
Moroccan news agency MAP quoted a military source as saying that a Navy coast guard on maritime patrol aborted a drug trafficking attempt after chasing a suspicious speedy boat.
Security services recorded 39 packs of drugs with a total weight of 1.5 tonnes of cannabis resin.
The Royal navy services handed the drug over to Royal Gendarmerie for investigation.
Morocco has been deploying all of its security services as part of the country’s vision to combat drug trafficking and other organized crimes.
In 2021, Moroccan police seized 191 tonnes and 158 kilograms of cannabis, one of the most used drugs in the North African country.
The amount of cannabis seized in 2021 represents a decrease of 12% compared to this year.
In addition to cannabis, Moroccan police also seized 1,437,362 psychotropic tablets in the past year.
Morocco police handled 82,950 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs during the same period. In total, police referred to courts 103,589 people — including 261 foreigners — on drug trafficking charges.
