Rabat – Morocco aims to return to pre-covid tourist numbers through the Ministry of Tourism’s vision.
Morocco’s head of government held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the country’s preparations for the upcoming tourist season. These preparations are expected to revitalize the country’s tourism sector. The details of this meeting were shared in a press release yesterday.
During the meeting, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Fatima Zahra Ammour presented her ministry’s vision. The plan aims to return Morocco’s tourism sector to its normal state as soon as possible. She also set a goal of registering a specific monthly volume of tourists, which should match or surpass pre-covid numbers.
Morocco’s ministry of tourism’s vision has a couple of main objectives it seeks to achieve in order to revitalize tourism in the country.
One of these objectives is conducting massive publicity campaigns and partnering up with international travel planners.
Morocco has already made progress on this aspect by partnering up with popular travel app TripAdvisor in March 2022. Morocco’s National Tourist Office (ONMT) hopes to promote Moroccan destinations to the app’s 490 million monthly active users through this partnership.
Another initiative that Morocco is pushing this week is the “Light Tour.” This international publicity tour seeks to promote Morocco as a holiday destination. The three-day campaign passed through stops such as Paris, London, and New York. This tour is part of the ONMT’s international campaign titled “Morocco: Land of Light.”
Another objective of the ministry’s vision is to encourage investment in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and particularly those that focus on providing entertainment value, the press release stated.

In a nutshell, the ministry of tourism’s vision seeks to increase the number of tourists in Morocco and to return to pre-pandemic numbers. Morocco’s ministry of tourism aims to achieve this by appealing to tourists worldwide and encouraging investment in the country’s entertainment sector.
The Moroccan government has recently declared that it is cancelling mandatory PCR testing for vaccinated passengers. This move appears to be a step in the right direction, as it should remove a potential barrier to tourists seeking to visit the country and potentially lead to the revival of Morocco’s tourism sector.
Tourism has suffered greatly over the previous two years, not just in Morocco, but across the globe. According to preliminary estimates by the UN’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals in 2021 were down by 72% compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Furthermore, UNWTO said that international tourist arrivals exceeded 415 million in 2021, while it was over 1.5 billion in 2019.
