Casablanca – Following her meeting on Tuesday with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Ayelet Shaked, Israel’s Interior Minister, confirmed her country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

Shaked also noted that her conversations with Bourita covered the two nations’ close bilateral relations and the collaborative initiatives that they intend to undertake.

Earlier on Tuesday, Shaked had also met with her counterpart Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit to discuss the prospects for collaboration between the two nations.

During the meeting, the officials reviewed the implementation of a number of cooperative initiatives in various fields.

On Monday, the Israeli interior minister began a four-day official visit to Morocco to promote the two nations’ expanding collaboration.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Interior, this visit is intended to begin the process that would allow Moroccans to move to Israel to work in the construction and nursing industries.

Shaked is the fourth Israeli official to visit Morocco since the two nations re-established relations under US auspices in late 2020.

On December 10, 2020, Israel and Morocco announced the restoration of diplomatic relations, which had been suspended in 2000 due to opposition from Moroccan authorities and parties.

Since then, Morocco and Israel have ratified agreements for cooperation in numerous security, economic, cultural, and sports spheres.

In February, the two countries signed an economic cooperation pact that seeks to boost the value of their commercial exchanges to half a billion dollars annually.

In addition, the two nations recently implemented direct flights between Casablanca and Tel Aviv, making it easier for Israeli visitors of Moroccan ancestry to visit the country without experiencing layovers in European countries.
