Rabat – Since Saturday evening, wildfires have damaged about 550 hectares of the Bab Azhar forest and farming fields in Taza, Northern Morocco.
Local authorities said that the fires did not result in any injuries or fatalities, emphasizing that the intervention crew made every effort to keep the nearby population safe.
In response to the blaze, Moroccan authorities mobilized dozens of people, including members of the country’s Civil Protection, Auxiliary Forces, and Royal Gendarmerie.
Water and forest services, members of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), and local residents also helped to contain and extinguish the fire.
In a statement, local authorities said operations are ongoing to put out the fires and rescue the inhabitants of nearby villages.
To secure threatened homes, the teams are mobilized to create trenches preventing the spread of the fires and the uprooting of flammable plants.
On-call teams have also been formed to monitor the areas that have been damaged for fear of further fire outbreaks due to wind and high temperatures.
Wildfires have become a global phenomenon as a result of frequent heat waves worldwide.
Morocco has been experiencing heat waves recently, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius, causing wildfires eruptions in several cities, including Tetouan, Ouazzane, Larache, and Taza.
At least one person has died in the fires, while more than 1,500 hectares of forest and lands have been destroyed.
Firefighters are still trying to put out fires in several regions across Morocco by using trucks, bulldozers, and water-dumping planes.
