Rabat – A fatal road accident after the overturning of a bus killed 19 people while 30 others sustained injuries on a national road linking Khouribga with Fquih Bensalah, in the Beni Mellal Khenifra region on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Boulanouare, an area five kilometers from Khouribga.

Local authorities, Royal Gendarmerie, as well as civil protection services rushed to the scene immediately after the accident.

Services transferred the remains of the road accident victims to the morgue while the injured were evacuated to the nearest health facilities in the region for medical care.

Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

20 people died while 2,244 were injured, including 76 in serious condition during at least 1,577 road accidents across Morocco between August 8-14.

According to a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the accidents are due to different reasons, including driver negligence, failure to respect road signs, excessive speed, non-vigilance of pedestrians, failure to respect the safety distance, as well as change of direction without using the turn signal.

Security services handed over 47,663 fines and filed 6,532 reports for road traffic offenses committed during the same period.
