Casablanca – Moroccan airports are approaching pre-pandemic levels of traffic, recording a 98% recovery rate by the end of July 2022, with nearly 2.4 million passengers compared to the same period in 2019, the National Airports Office (ONDA) confirmed on Twitter.

In the first half of 2022, the country’s airports received a total of 7.4 million passengers on 70,680 flights, a recovery rate of 64% for passengers and 72% for airport traffic compared to the same period in 2019.

Since international flights resumed on February 7, Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport has seen a total of 2,756,685 passengers by the end of July. It handled 27,258 passengers, representing a 59% recovery rate compared to the same period in 2019.

Similarly, domestic airports saw a 64% recovery rate in passengers and a 72% increase in Moroccan air traffic compared to 2019.

Marrakech Menara airport has also had a considerable number of departures and arrivals, with 1,764,080 passengers recorded and a 56% recovery rate.

Agadir Al Massira airport, on the other hand, has received a total of 613,917 passengers, a recovery rate of 63%.

The initial recovery rates seen in Tetouan, Guelmim, and Oujda airports are 444%, 126%, and 104%, respectively, ONDA noted.

Monthly air passenger traffic increased in the first half of this year, according to ONDA, partly due to Operation Marhaba 2022, which facilitates the temporary return of diaspora members.

March had a recovery rate of 70%, whereas May and June had rates of 109% and 89%, respectively.

Except for South America and the Maghreb nations, all other markets saw cumulative traffic recovery rates of more than 60% between February 7 and May 31.

In contrast, Europe, which accounts for more than 84% of international air traffic, saw a 77% recovery rate over this time period compared to 2019.
