Rabat – A recent benchmark report by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has indicated that Women’s football is witnessing continuous global growth in terms of revenues from sponsorships, broadcast deals, merchandising, exposure, and popularity.

Women’s football is “enjoying the greatest level of global interest in its history,” said the report, adding that the sport is also enjoying the interest of a growing number of football fans from across the world.

The report cited the recent 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which took place in Morocco, as an example.

The final game between the host country and South Africa set a new attendance record in the history of African women’s football. The Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat hosted around 50,000 spectators during the event.

The report, which is the second edition of the FIFA Benchmarking Report on Women’s Football, aims to support the growth of the sport by offering practical solutions to the game’s stakeholders.

The report analyzed data from 30 of the top women’s football leagues and 294 clubs against the first edition of the report, which was released in May 2021.

The survey findings indicated that clubs reported a year-on-year commercial revenue increase of 33%, while 77% of leagues had a title sponsor, an increase of 11% from last year. In addition, 90% of leagues had a “written strategy” in 2022, compared to 79% in 2021.

Published on Friday, the report added that international transfer fees in professional women’s football “hit a new record” of $2.1 million (MAD 13 million), an increase of 73% compared to 2020.

Morocco’s National Women’s Football Team has gained widespread popularity in the country during the WAFCON, with thousands of Moroccans offering their unwavering support and admiration to the Atlas Lionesses.
