Rabat – Morocco’s renewable energy developer Gaia Energy and Israel’s hydrogen-focused startup H2Pro have partnered to develop a demonstration (demo) green hydrogen project in Morocco.

The two parties signed a strategic agreement on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN Climate Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh with the objective of using 10-20 megawatt-scale H2Pro electrolyzer technology for the demo project in Morocco.

Under the agreement, Gaia Energy plans to explore the potential use of H2Pro technology in the company’s gigawatt-scale green hydrogen production system, which is currently under development in Morocco.

Morocco’s emerging green hydrogen ecosystem has attracted numerous investments over the past months with UM6P, Oort Energy, and Chariot Limited recently launching pilot projects for green hydrogen and ammonia across the country.

The growing international interest in Morocco’s abundant renewable energy and potential in producing low-cost green hydrogen reflects the country’s key role in leading “the world in the clean energy transition,” says the CEO of Gaia Energy Moundir Zniber.

The executive argues that Gaia’s strategic partnership with H2Pro supports Morocco’s energy transition agenda.

“By combining the power of Gaia’s renewable energy assets with H2Pro’s efficient and cost-effective green hydrogen production technology, we bring Morocco and our region [Israel] one step closer to this vision,” Zniber explained.

In addition to strengthening the position of Morocco as a green hydrogen hub, the partnership, according to the CEO of H2Pro Talmon Marco, represents “a milestone in Moroccan-Israel relations, demonstrates the triumph of regional cooperation over climate change and is a clear indicator of the key role innovation plays in diplomacy.”

The partnership launched during COP 27 reflects the conference’s call for cooperation to address climate challenges and support the vulnerable.

As Israel’s Minister of Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg stated during the signing ceremony, “No country, and no sector, and no one can do it alone. We are all gathered in this cause, and if we can use it for the sake of our children, we will be blessed.”

Zandberg attended the ceremony alongside the Director for Egypt and the Maghreb region at the Israeli Foreign Ministry Lior Ben Dor and two senior officers from Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Rachid Tahiri and Kelthoum Belhaj.
