Rabat – Israel and Morocco’s water authorities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation between the two countries’ institutions in the area of drinking water.
The Jerusalem Post reported the signing between Morocco’s National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and the national water company of Israel on Thursday during the Global Investment Forum.
Under the agreement, both authorities will work to establish cooperation in the areas of water and liquid sanitation.
Reports identified Israel as one of the “world’s leaders in water technologies” for reusing nearly 90% of its wastewater. The country also produces nearly 80% of its drinking water through desalination plants, the Jerusalem Post said.
Israel has repeatedly expressed its determination to strengthen cooperation with Morocco in water management.
In May, Israel’s Minister of Science and Technology Orit Farkash Hacohen said that innovative Israeli companies can “contribute enormously to the achievement of the objectives set out by Morocco and Israel in several areas, such as the management of water and renewable energies.”
The statement is in line with the Israeli government’s vision to boost ties with Morocco at all levels.
Both countries re-established relations in December 2020, and vowed to cooperate on all levels, including technology, innovation, political dialogue, and trade.
Morocco is among the countries that have been affected by drought and a water crisis due to lack of rainfall.
As part of the country’s measures to tackle the water crisis, the country has been working on projects of desalination in several provinces.
Recently, local authorities in Tangier approved a $2 million budget to fund initial studies for a desalination project in the city.
The project is part of Morocco’s National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027.
Morocco launched the program in 2020, with the aim of strengthening the country’s water supply for drinking and irrigation purposes in areas threatened by water scarcity.
