Rabat – Morocco ranked 79th out of 131 countries in the Portulans Institute’s Network Readiness Index, which measures the application and impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) in global economies.

The ranking put Morocco in 8th place among the group of lower-middle income countries, according to the report, and 9th in the Arab World.

The index said Morocco performs particularly well in e-commerce legislation, ICT service exports, and high-tech and medium-high-tech manufacturing.

The weakest indicators for the North African country were education quality, adult literacy rate, and online access to financial accounts, among others.

The US, Singapore, and Sweden topped the ranking, as well as their group of high-income countries. Ukraine, Indonesia, and India made the top 3  the group of lower-middle income states, in which Morocco was also placed.

In the Arab region, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar were the top 3. Meanwhile, South Africa, Mauritius, and Kenya ranked the best in Africa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Chad were in the bottom three of the ranking.

With expert opinions and reports citing digitalization and improvement of internet access as key to future social and economic advancement in Morocco, the country has made improving its digital infrastructure a priority.

Despite this, several reports have pointed out that Morocco lags behind, particularly in the financial sector. A report released earlier this year uncovered that 98% of transactions in Morocco are still conducted in cash.
